Eye Symptoms Requiring Urgent Medical Care

Note icon
This list of symptoms and possible eye problems is for general reference only and is not intended to diagnose any specific eye disease or condition. Online symptom checkers can't cover all visual symptoms or all possible related conditions. Eye injuries, sudden changes to—or loss of—vision and eye pain can be signs of serious problems, requiring emergency attention. If you have any eye or vision symptoms, talk to your ophthalmologist. Always consult a doctor about your own health and seek treatment if you have any worries about your eyes or vision.

1. Sudden loss of vision (partial or complete, in one or both eyes)

Could signal retinal detachment, vascular blockage, or stroke.

2. Flashes of light, sudden increase in floaters, or a “curtain/shadow” over vision

Could be warning signs of retinal tear or detachment.

3. Severe eye pain or headache with blurred vision, halos, or nausea

May indicate acute angle-closure glaucoma — an emergency.

4. Red eye with decreased vision, pain, or light sensitivity?

Possible infectious keratitis (corneal ulcer) or uveitis.

5. Double vision that appears suddenly

Could point to neurological causes (stroke, aneurysm, nerve palsy).

6. Chemical splash or foreign body in the eye

Requires immediate flushing and urgent care.

7. Sudden drooping of eyelid with weakness/numbness in face or limbs

May indicate stroke or aneurysm.

8. Bulging eye with sudden vision changes or restricted movement

Possible orbital cellulitis or hemorrhage.

9. Significant trauma to the eye (blunt or penetrating injury)

Risk of globe rupture, bleeding, or retinal damage.

10. Rapid swelling and redness around the eye with fever

May be orbital cellulitis, which can spread quickly and threaten life.
