Dr Owen Hee is a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist with over 20 years’ experience as an eye specialist and internationally recognised expertise in the areas of cataract surgery and
glaucoma treatment, specifically Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery.
Additionally, Dr Owen also has extensive experience managing the full range of eye conditions such as:contact lens-related problems, dry eye syndrome, refractive errors such as myopia, children’s eye conditions (paediatric ophthalmology), implantable collamer lens (ICL) for correction of myopia, diabetic eye disease, age-related macular degeneration, floaters, retinal tears and retinal detachment to name some.
Dr Owen received both his undergraduate and postgraduate training in London. In 2011, he was awarded a scholarship from the Singapore Ministry of Health to undergo further postgraduate training in London in Glaucoma and Health Economics. He sub-specializes in Glaucoma and is accredited to perform various Minimally-invasive Glaucoma Surgeries (MIGS). In addition, he has received specialized training in health services research, looking into care delivery in ophthalmology: specifically at health technology evaluation in the areasof glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, cataract surgery and early detection so that patients can receive early treatment before irreversible vision loss. This work has helped inform the wider community of ophthalmologists and also led to Dr Owen’s appointment as Part-time Consultant at the Ministry of Health providing Ophthalmology expert advice to the Policy, Research and Evaluation office there.
Previously, Dr Owen was Senior Consultant at the National Healthcare Group Eye Institute (NHGEI). He was also the Quality Review Officer of NHGEI, with the responsibility of monitoring and improving the quality and safety of care for the whole Institute. Dr Owen is passionate about Quality and Safety in healthcare and has served on the faculty of the Clinical Practice Improvement Program at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He has also been active in training and education, serving as Clinical Senior Lecturer at the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Clinical Tutor at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. For his efforts in training the next generation of eye surgeons, he has also received the Best Surgical Teacher award at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
In his earlier training as an eye specialist, Dr Hee has worked at the Singapore National Eye Center, Department of Ophthalmology at the National University Hospital and the Eye Centre at KK Hospital. As a result, he has been well trained in the treatment of a full range of ophthalmology conditions covering: cornea, glaucoma, cataract, retina, paediatric, neurophthalmology, oculoplastics and uveitis.
